Horse Riding Tips For Safe Summer Riding

Keep cool and safe in the saddle with our horse riding tips for safe summer riding, from what to wear to when to ride. Summer rides with your horse? We've got you covered!

Beat The Summer Heat

Keep you and your horse cool by avoiding exercise during the extreme heat at peak times of the day. In hot weather, there is an increased risk of heat stroke in horses, so beat the summer heat by adjusting your exercise routine during periods of hot weather.

Riding at cooler times will help keep you and your horse safe from heat exhaustion. Ensure that your horse has water access before and after your ride.

Drinking cool water will refresh your horse but remember to drink plenty of clean water yourself! Keep hydrated in hot temperatures. If you plan to school your horse during hotter weather, choose early morning or late evening to ride.

An overheated horse can rapidly become a serious welfare case with heat stress, so take plenty of breaks during your schooling sessions, even in slightly cooler summer temperatures. Regularly take your horse to water sources and encourage them to drink by adding sliced pear or apple or a touch of apple juice to a bucket of water. Feeding a recovery mash after hard work as a sloppy mash is a great idea during hot weather and will encourage your horse to drink more water per day in hot weather.

Remember that the actual air temperature is important to consider. Even when the sun is not shining, it can still be hot and humid, making hot horses feel even hotter. Keep an eye on temperatures to ensure you both can enjoy safe summer riding.

Don't Forget The Sun Cream For Safe Summer Riding

Remember the sunscreen if you're heading to the stables. Applying sun cream before you get stuck into duties around the yard will mean you're less likely to forget to apply! Apply sun protection to your horses' pink skin to help prevent sunburn. Wearing a hat to protect your face from the sun will offer additional protection against the sun's rays.

Experts recommend that you reapply sun protection every couple of hours, and the good news is that our Performance Riding Tights feature two deep thigh pockets, deep enough for your tube of sun protection on the go and your mobile phone!
