How to recognise mud fever!

Keep your horses safe this Firework season

Horses are flight animals and anything unexpected can startle them. Each horse will vary on how they respond to fireworks (just like us humans), but reactions can be pretty severe and potentially dangerous for both you and your horse. Equetech have come up with some tips to help you and your horse survive the firework season over the next couple of weeks, as we know fireworks night might officially only be one day, but fireworks are likely to be going on for a few weeks, here's our guide to a stress free firework season. 1. What events are going on nearby where you keep your horse? Check out local newspapers, shop notice boards or a local radio station to find out where the displays will be in your area. 2. Where possible, tell...

Laura's Dressage Outing - March 2018

Hello, Laura here, one of the Equetech Real Riders. This weekend Mikey and I headed to our first dressage show this year, in fact it was my first dressage post my back operation last November and the last time we did some dressage was last June; so it had been a while! We headed out with a goal in mind, to get a last-minute qualification to the Chiltern and Thames Rider Dressage Championship in a few week's time, we needed a score of more than 60% and to place 1st or 2nd, after a bit of a wobble in my practise session on Friday evening I was beginning to think I had bitten off a bit too much and maybe putting unnecessary pressure on myself, however, we set off for the show with the goal of doing our best! I don't mind sharing wit...

Mud Fever in Horses

Mud Fever is a common term used to describe an infection of the skin found mainly in the lower legs of our horses. As the name suggests, this infection caused by bacteria or fungal organisms, also known as pastern dermatitis, is more prevalent during wet and muddy conditions. As most parts of the UK are currently experiencing incredibly wet weather, which has created horribly muddy turnout fields, most horse owners will have a mud fever worrying nag at the back of their minds. However, mud isn't the only cause of mud fever. Common Causes of Mud Fever Washing your horses legs too often and not drying them Standing for prolonged periods in deep mud or water. Avoiding Winter Colic in Horses

If you've owned horses for any length of time the chances are you've had to deal with a horse with colic. This much dreaded condition can affect horses at any time of year but it does seem to be more prevalent during the winter months. This is mainly due to three things; reduced water intake, reduced movement and increased feeding of concentrates. Here are a few tips to help reduce your horse's risk of colic over the winter months. Always have fresh water available. An average sized horse needs to drink about 6-12 gallons of water a day as this helps keep the intestinal tract moving and therefore reduces the risk of impaction. So, how do we encourage our horse to drink during the cold weather? Horses are most likely to...
